Rachael Patching started her film career from an active interest in underwater filming at age 17. Inspired by the adventures of Jacque Cousteau and a desire to share secret worlds with people who would otherwise pass them by. Training on 35mm under Andy Roelants (Metro Film) and progressing into digital camera operating and directing. Spanning twelve years her work has taken her to Germany, Belgium, France, The UK, Vanuatu, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. She has worked on some exciting projects in that time including work with BMW, Redbull, Greenpeace, TV3 News, The ITM fishing Show, France5, Maori television, UNICEF, OXFAM and recently The Discovery Chanel.
Currently Rachael co-directs a film collective called Preditor, that specializes in creative documentary style advertising alongside writing and directing films and freelancing as a camera operator. Rachael’s ambition for the future is to contribute a fresh approach to the Documentary Film genres and to work alongside a host of talented professionals, embracing technology, art and story telling.
In 2011 Rachael begun her masters in Science Communication and Natural History Film Making with The University of Otago and Natural History New Zealand. There she developed in the art of story telling. In 2012 her and her film partner Roland Kahurangi’s graduate documentary film ‘Gone Curling’ won multiple national and international awards including Best New Zealand Short Film, Best Emerging Talent and was nominated for a Panda Award alongside films produced by Animal Planet, BBC and Disney. Rachael took the opportunity to tour with her film, attending workshops, seminars, pitching sessions, screenings and the odd industry cocktail party. A highlight of the tour was being invited to attend the IDFA academy for young filmmakers, alongside some extremely passionate and talented filmmakers from across the globe.
